New Web site designed for Growers Direct Coffee - a sneak preview

We recently designed a new web site for Growers Direct Coffee, a fair trade coffee company based in California. The web site launched in December 2007, and the specifications are laid out below. The live web site can be found here:

Flash Banner - lightweight and elegant

The customer specified that there should be a Flash banner on the web site, which reflected the model of 'from tree to cup', charting the journey of the coffee bean from harvesting through to consumption. The Flash animation should be fast to download, elegant and easy upon the eye. Our solution was a light-weight, but glossy and clean animation which uses windowed frames to take the visitor on a journey from tree to cup, without detracting too much from the content.

For the coding and the design of the web site we needed to produce something easy to edit, W3C standards compliant and search engine friendly. It was also important that the web site be scaleable and the layout remain unaffected however much or little content was added to, or removed from, each page. Accordingly, we came up with a soluton which is slick both front and and backend. The website solution adheres to W3C XHTML 1.0 strict, uses pure CSS and div so that markup for layout and presentation could be clearly distinguished from semantic markup.

The web site is so cleanly coded that even a non-technical person should be able to add and edit content and menu items on the site with relatively little trouble, without any need for a content management system.

The layout is of the web site is done exclusively using the <div> tag, which means that semantic markup (the html tags which are important to search engines), is devoted entirely to textual content.
