Some Historic developments in Network Security cont...

These evaluation factors can be reduced to several key aspects: accessibility, usability and stability. Likewise, for specific products or solutions, the factors usually boil down to accuracy, high performance and reliability. A good network security model is would be expected to fulfill such criteria, and they are the core factors which should be used to evaluate whether new network security solutions can meet the demands of a contemporary network environment.

Figure 9: network security model in 2006

Figure 9 shows a typical network security model circa 2006 which has now become significantly more complicated than at any time during previous 20 years: including multiple security zones, mixed internet and intranet, mixed access methods (e.g. wired and wireless) and shared IT environments. The methodological evaluation of network security needs to be improved considerably in order to meet the challenge of such complexity. Meanwhile, the development of evaluation methods for both network security and network assessment methodologies are starting to look more straightforward to forecast. Looking at the security model’s development from 2000-2006 (Figure 10), there is a noticeable pattern whereby the development of the security model is driven by requirement trends that exist and increase along a fairly stable trajectory; that of capacity - more bandwidth, increased remote access, VoIP, mobile integration, mixed environments etc. As such, the increased implementation of such components provides a trajectory that can be predicted and mapped in order to measure security performance assessments against long term requirements.
